We live in a high wild fire risk area and the horses do also where they are boarded. We have fires burning about 30 miles away from us and can see the smoke over the mountains. We are surrounded by open land that has burned before and we were OK because we are far enough away from those areas. Never the less there is still the fear that a fire will start in the night and escalate. I have a bag with essential papers such as my birth certificate, packed and ready. I am so glad that we have no pets now to have to worry about. Just the horses. When the wind comes up I check every few hours all through the night, with the remote camera the I have at the horses. Flying debris is a concern. A piece of roofing metal got loose last night, and fortunately did not land on a horse. All the horses had debris such as pieces of plastic and feed bags that blew into their pens with them. I have done quite a bit of desensitizing over the years to get them unafraid of such things. Otherwise worst case is a horse trying to jump out of its pen and getting hung up. So until we have some rain and the high winds continue, anything could happen.

Wild Fires

Oh my goodness Marlene, that is far too close for comfort. I am praying that the wind drops and the fires nearest you can be controlled. It looked terrifying on the news last night.
ReplyDeleteThanks for commenting. We have had no rain so fingers crossed we will have some soon and that the winds will go away. A very anxious time right now.
ReplyDeleteI'm sorry this is happening. California is experiences a horrific disaster. Hopeful you and yours will be ok.
ReplyDeleteThank you Sandra. We are now finding out that the Mayor of LA is partly to blame as is our Governor. Both Democrats. It is to do with cutting funds to the fire department and hiring LBQT people who are not trained properly. Then the environmentalists via the Governor have stopped some of the water supply needed to fight the fires. I am all for supporting the environment and gay etc people. But this has gone too far. The consequences remain to be seen. I am grateful thus far to be safe and the horses safe. We don't know what will happen until we get significant rain. A few more sleepless night s for me until then. Oh and one fire was caused deliberately by an arsonist !!
